Military
Diyarbekir had a historical military presence and importance throughout history. During the pre-Tanzimat Ottoman period, it was a Paşa Sancak had a designated martial Paşa. It also historically contained a large arsenal in the citadel. In addition, during WWI, it contained German and Austro-Hungarian troops and vehicles.
